Martin Adámek

Clarinetist / My first “Répons”

Répons (1981-1984) by Pierre Boulez, for six soloists, orchestra, electronic sounds, and electronic system in real time.

It has been only a few months since I’ve become a part of the Ensemble intercontemporain.

I therefore have not yet had the opportunity to give a world premiere for a large number of pieces. I have, however, had the chance to give a few national premieres, such as those during our tour in Asia in October 2016. Nevertheless, the two concerts that come to mind were not premieres, and in fact are quite far from that. I am, of course, talking about my “personal premiere” of Pierre Boulez’s Répons, performed September 16 and 17, 2016, in Duisburg, Germany. These were also my first official concerts as a member of the Ensemble. Throughout these two evenings, we played Répons four times in total, which gave me the chance to discover this magnificent work in concert, in a completely new light.

It was an eminently symbolic moment for me, which allowed me to understand the great legacy of Pierre Boulez. This experience was also quite memorable, as my colleagues gave me an extremely warm welcome before this first concert.
